About First Actuarial

First Actuarial has been around since 2004, when a small group of like-minded actuaries came together to bring fresh thinking to pensions consultancy. Two decades later, we’re heading for 20% revenue growth this year, employing around 500 people across six locations.

We’re still an independent business with no chargeable hour’s targets, giving our people the time to deliver their best work and excel. We shape our high-quality services by listening closely to our clients’ needs. And we price those services fairly.

As we develop our business, prospects for our people grow. Our Basingstoke, Leeds, Manchester, Peterborough, London and Tonbridge offices provide supportive work environments where everyone can make a difference. We enjoy work and celebrate our successes. And we provide support and helpful feedback, so we all learn and improve.

We love numbers, but we love people more. Staff wellbeing and work-life balance have always been core values. Beyond the firm, we’re known for our integrity. We’re happy to challenge conventional thinking and speak up. Our pioneering work is set to transform the lives of millions of younger people with a new type of pension.

Internship Programme

We run a 4-8 weeks paid summer internship programme that offers great training and work experience allowing you to get a good understanding of the role of a future Actuary. You will learn how our firm operates and get to meet colleagues from across the firm, including our Partners. You will have a dedicated learning buddy to support your internship.

Actuarial Internship Opportunities 2025

For 2025, we have internship opportunities in all 5 of our offices.

All our interns are welcomed into a stimulating work environment, working with professionals from diverse backgrounds in friendly and close-knit teams.

What do actuaries do?

Actuaries use numeracy skills to help pension scheme trustees and employers manage their pension schemes. We grapple with huge uncertainties like inflation and manage the risks that can damage people’s lives.

What will I be doing on a day-to-day basis?

Although it sounds like a cliché, no two days will be the same. As an actuarial intern, you ‘ll be working with a range of clients – both for-profit and not-for-profit – on actuarial calculations, models and client communications.

 Testimonials

“I have had a fantastic time working with the Actuarial Team at First Actuarial. The two exceptional aspects of this experience were the team members and the work that I was engaged with. Everyone was extremely welcoming and friendly, and nobody was too busy to help when I had questions. Furthermore, Actuaries of all seniorities took time to ask how I was settling in, how I was finding the work, and whether I was considering pursuing actuarial work further. The work was both engaging and of real value – this internship involves real responsibilities on a wide range of tasks. There was help at every stage though, with many training sessions so that I was confident in completing the tasks. I have learnt an incredible amount and would thoroughly recommend this internship to anyone, especially those interested in finance or modelling”

Reefe Conley, 2024 Summer Intern, First Actuarial LLP

“My summer at First Actuarial has been an incredibly enriching experience, offering me a well-rounded introduction to the actuarial profession. From day one, I was welcomed into a team that fosters a supportive and collaborative atmosphere, where learning and professional growth are deeply encouraged. I had the opportunity to dive into a variety of projects, each allowing me to apply and expand my technical skills, while also gaining insights into the real-world impact of our work.

The culture at First Actuarial truly stands out for its emphasis on continuous learning and open communication. I felt empowered to ask questions, explore new ideas, and contribute meaningfully to my team. This experience has solidified my interest in the actuarial field, and I feel more confident and equipped to pursue a career in this industry. If you're looking for an internship that combines technical skill development with a supportive and engaging work environment, I highly recommend First Actuarial.
